David Sedaris incorporates the tone paranoid in his narrative Big Boy, by using diction to describe how the speaker feels. The narrative is about a young man who excuses himself from an afternoon Easter dinner with his family to use the restroom. As he enters the restroom he sees the biggest piece of feces he has ever seen and attempts to take care of it. Sedaris uses the diction “coiled specimen” and “monster” to further illustrate upon the idea that this terd is something greater. Thus showing us that paranoia has set into the speaker. Sedaris also uses the diction “whereabouts” and “panic” to elucidate the fear the speaker has about people thinking he was the one to release this untamed beast. The final piece of diction the author uses is “Come on pal.Let’s move it.” This piece of text evidence also clarifies that, the speaker is paranoid of people wondering why he has been gone so long, and that he refers to the feces as “it” to show that it is something else.
